Adventures in Products: Cloth Diapers

Before Rebekah was born, Daniel and I decided that we wanted to give cloth diapers a try. There are a wide range of reasons why a family may choose to use cloth diapers. Environmental reasons. Monetary reasons. Health reasons. We really did not have any one specific reason for wanting to do cloth diapers. I like the idea of less waste ending up in a landfill. Daniel likes that we know what is against Rebekah's bottom (he has pretty sensitive skin and is easily irritated by fragrances and chemicals and worried that she may be the same). And, let's be honest, we both like saving money!

When we are going to make an investment into something, Daniel is an amazing researcher. He likes to make sure we are getting the best quality at the best price. So he did A LOT of research on cloth diapers. And he found a brand of cloth diapers that we thought would work well for us. Grovia Hybrid Diapers.

Before I go any further, Grovia does not know who I am. This is not a sponsored post. I just wanted to share with you what is working for us. Grovia does have a referral reward program, so if you would like to try them, let me know! Ok, Go!

Info on the diaper:
The Grovia Hybrid Diaper is a 2 part diaper system. The outer shell and the inner pad. One of the things that we really like about the Grovia Hybrid is that when the diaper is wet, you can just change the pad by snapping it out and snapping in a new dry pad, reusing the shell and cutting down on the amount of laundry. Another reason why we picked the Grovia Hybrid is that the shell is also compatible with a disposable pad for when you are on the go and may not want to carry a soggy, wet cloth diaper around in your diaper bag.

Our diapering system:
We are currently full time cloth diapering Rebekah and have 14 shells and 26 pads. (Sometimes the start up cost of cloth diapers discourages peopleWe were VERY blessed to receive all of the shells and pad that we have a gifts from friends and family for either baby showers or Christmas gifts!) We also purchased a wipe warmer with 32 reusable wipes. I plan on doing a post just about the wipes, soon. I do a load of diaper laundry every other day. I wash all of the wipes, pads and shells together, and the dry only the pads and wipes. The shells air dry in less time than the pads dry in the dryer! I'm also planning on doing a post about my washing routine. So more to come about our cloth diaper adventure!!

Did you use cloth diapers? Do you have any tips for me as we learn more about the world of cloth?

Adventures in Products: Kuerig 2.0

We all love getting real mail, right? And packages are the best kind of real mail. And packages that contain something that is free...well that is pretty much the cherry on top of the Chick'fil'a peach shake! So imagine how excited I was to find out I was getting a package with a FREE gift in it from Influenster! Want to know what it was???
And 2 types of K-cups.
The little ones that just brew 1 cup, and new big ones that brew 4 cups into a carafe that comes with the Kuerig.

Now this was extra exciting for me because I had quit drinking coffee when we started trying to start our family, and continued my coffee fast during my pregnancy. This little beauty showed up about 4 weeks after Rebekah was born (perfect timing!). Daniel doesn't drink coffee so I had always considered buying a Kuerig so I could just brew my 1 cup of coffee in the morning...but my hesitation was "what would I do when I had guests over"?? I guess they could each brew their own cup, but the Kuerig 2.0 totally solves this problem! With the bigger size K-cup and the carafe I can make a pot of coffee too! It is so easy to say #HelloKuerig in the mornings (or any time!) Another reason why I am so excited about this Kuerig is I can make coffee easily with one hand. Having a newborn, I'm learning to do many things with one hand while holding my sweet girl in the other...including type this blog post!

In all honesty, there are 2 things that I would change about this nifty little machine.
(1) The carafe does not fit in the Kuerig unless the coffee cup pedestil is removed. Meaning you have to fine a place for either one or the other when it is not in use. In a perfect world they would fit all together making a nice compact machine.
(2) Not all k-cups fit in the new Kuerig 2.0. I shop at a store that has Roundy brand groceries and I got the store brand cups that I thought would fit (and were $2 cheaper than the brand name cups). Well, when I put them in the Kuerig 2.0 the touch display screen told me they were not the right cups for the machine?! Bummer.

But over all I am loving my new Kuerig 2.0 from Influester
If you would like to join Influenster and have the opportunity to receive free packages in the mail like this one, leave me a comment and I can send you an invitation to join! If you are wondering what kinds of products you may get for free here are some links to other items I have received free from Influenster.

* I received this product free from Influenster, but the opinions in this post are all my own true opinion.

Adventures in Products: Pretty Little Beauty Swap

Happy Friday!
I know it's been pretty quite around here lately, but I promise I'm working on a few posts to update you all on our latest adventures...including an update on the basement and an update on our little bun in the oven!
But today I wanted to show you what I got in the mail this week!!
In May I signed up for a swap
(remember how I love swaps!!)

And they way these ladies do their matching (if you want) is to match you with a blogger who lives near you! The only other "Chicago land area" bloggers I 'know' all live in the city, so it was fun to 'meet' a sweet gal from the suburbs!
My swap partner was Meagan from
All The Joys
(look how adorable she is with her man!!)

And look at the super fun beauty package she sent!
I've already been loving the dry shampoo and the new eye shadow colors. The oil tissues are in my purse ~ totally going to use those up so fast with this hot and humid weather! And I've got big plans to use the face mask and nail polish this weekend for a little pampering. So fun! Thank you, Meagan!!

Have you gotten anything fun in the mail lately?

Adventures in Gluten Free: Toaster Pastry Face Off

We are always looking for new gluten free products to try. Often there are several brands that have similar products and we like to compare and see which brand we prefer. Remember this fall when we did the gluten free cookie face off? Well, we were at our local grocery store this weekend and Daniel said he was in the mood for toaster pastries (Ok, let's be honest, he said he wanted a Pop Tart, but Kellogg's doesn't make gluten free Pop Tarts...and who really calls them toaster pastries?) We did find 2 different brands of strawberry toaster pastry and decided to have a face off!

Here is the packaging.
We enjoy several other glutino brand products, and this is the first time we have ever tried an eco-planet brand product.

Price: $4.49
Pastries per box: 4 (2 packages of 2 pastries)
Price per pastry: $1.12
Flavor: The frosting did add sweetness to the pastry, but that was about the only flavor that we tasted. The filling was nearly non-existent and did not really taste like strawberry.
Texture: The pastry held together well in the toaster and was crispy after being toasted. The filling was very sparse and dry. Not a moist jam like filling that the picture on the box suggests.

Price: $4.79
Pastries per box: 5 (individually wrapped)
Price per pastry: $0.96
Flavor: Not to sweet, actually a little on the salty side. The strawberry flavored center did taste very much like strawberry. However there is no frosting on this pastry, which I think would improve the flavor.
Texture: The pastry held together in the toaster well, and was crispy after being toasted. Very similar in texture to Kellogg's Pop Tarts.

Results: If I could take the frosting from the Eco-planet pastry and put it on the Glutino pastry, I think we would have an amazing little treat! As is, we both much preferred the flavor, texture, packaging and price of the Glutino brand toaster pastry over the Eco-planet. However, at nearly $1 per pastry, they will only be a special occasion item in our grocery cart!

Do you know of another brand of gluten free toaster pastry out there that we should to try?

Adventures in Products: Beautycounter

A few weeks ago I got the opportunity to try out a fairly new line of beauty products called

Beautycounter is a company that aims to
Educate families about toxic chemicals
Create safe and effective products
All products are vegan and gluten-free

I got to try 4 different products, and I wanted to tell you about them!

Gentle Exfoliator Polishing Cream  - Out of the 4 products I got to try, this one is my favorite. I have always had a hard time finding an exfoliator that had just the right amount of scrub. Well, this one isn't to wimpy, and it isn't to rough. It has just the right amount of scrub for my face to feel clean, without felling like all the moisture is scrubbed off. I love that it doesn't have a chemical smell like so many exfoliators have. It has a nice, clean citrus smell.
Clean Everyday Shampoo - Normally, I don't try new shampoo. I like what I get, and it works for me...but I gave the Beautycounter clean shampoo a try and I am so glad that I did! I never was thrilled with using lots of chemicals on my hair, but I just thought that was the best way to get it clean. Until now! This shampoo leaves my hair feeling clean and not weighted down without the crazy chemicals.
Rinse Everyday Conditioner - I have been using both the shampoo and conditioner for a few weeks and while I love the shampoo, I have not been overly thrilled with the conditioner. I tend to have dry hair, and I just need a little more deep conditioning to keep my hair hydrated properly.
Hydrate Everyday Body Lotion - This lotion is perfect to apply when you are just out of the shower! I have pretty sensitive skin and try to use mostly lotion what is unscented. This lotion has been working wonderfully on my sensitive skin, leaving it soft and hydrated!

As I have tried the products and looked into the practices of Beautycounter over the last few weeks I have been really impressed. Not only are all of the products vegan, but they are also all gluten free! I had honestly never thought about the fact that the products Daniel and I put on our skin could contain gluten. But for people with more serious gluten intolerance or celiac disease, the gluten absorbed by the skin from beauty products could be a big problem. Not an issue for Beautycounter products. They carefully pick and test each ingredient that goes into every one of their products. Check out this video for a little more info on Beautycounter.

This is a quick recap of the video (if you don't have time to watch)
"Much of what goes on our skin (our largest organ) is absorbed into the body and can end up in our bloodstream. So shouldn’t the products we use day after day be safe? Beginning with a team of respected health advocates, chemists and makeup artists to conceive and formulate prestige-quality products that would perform, she then added direct sales experts, business executives and leaders in technology to create a brand that would be able to make a difference."

SO Great, right?! I don't know about you, but I'm always looking for interesting, special, and perfect gifts for friends and family this time of year. Might I suggest checking out some of the Beautycounter products? They have some great gift sets that start at $40!

And they have a brand new KIDS line of products ~ shampoo, conditioner, soap, sunscreen and
(How adorable, right?!)

*I did receive these products for free, but the opinions are all my true and honest opinion.

Adventures in Products: Mary Kay ~ The Glamour Look Box

Ok, friends. Truth time. A few weeks ago when I heard the name Mary Kay, I thought of "mom make-up". Nothing wrong with that, just not the brand of make-up I would personally buy. Mostly because I thought you had to go to one of those parties at someone's house to purchase Mary Kay products. (You know the type, the party where you feel guilty and purchase something that is over priced, and you don't really want it...)Enter The Glamour Look Vox Box by Mary Kay and Influenster.

(Side note: If you don't already know about Influenster it is "a free -to-join community of invited trendsetters who live to give opinions of products and experiences. Influenster creates links between brands and members to reward participation and influence future products." If you would like an invite and the chance to review new products, leave me a comment and I will send you and invite!)

Ok, back to Mary Kay. I now see Mary Kay products in a new light! For the most part, I am a fan. Here is what I received in my complementary Glamour Look Box from Mary Kay
I've had a few weeks to try all the products and here are my thoughts about each one:

Mary Kay Lash Love Lengthing Mascara (retail price $15.00)
While this mascara did a good job of making my lashes look longer, I did not like it as much as my current, regular brand of mascara. I am a waterproof mascara kind of gal and this was not waterproof. Towards the end of a long day, I also had some trouble with the mascara flaking off my lashes and getting into my eyes. Since I wear contacts, this was a problem, and not one that I have with my regular mascara.

Mary Kay Lash Primer (retail price $15.00)
Honestly, I had never tried (or even heard of) lash primer. I learned that it is a clear coat of mascara, that you use before applying the black mascara. I did notice that when I used the primer first, the mascara went on smoother and I didn't have to work as hard to separate my lashes because they were already set. I will definitely use this product, but I don't consider it a necessity in my make-up bag.

Mary Kay True Dimensions Lipstick (retail price $18.00)
So, I'm just not a lipstick girl. I try, really I do. And I do like the texture and color of lipstick, but will really only use it on special occasions. If you are a lipstick lady, this would be a good thing for you.

I am not normally a purple eye shadow girl, but I have ended up really liking this color as well as the cream aspect of the product. I have several other cream eye shadows, but all in neutral/nude colors that I use more as a base. It has taken me some practice to be able to blend this product in well, as it is very pigmented and a little goes a long ways!

Mary Kay Cream Eye / Concealer Brush (retail price $10.00)
I have to be honest and say that I was not a fan of this brush. I like softer brushes, and this one was quite stiff, even after working the bristles in my hand for a while...it kind of hurt my eye lids when I was applying the cream eye color. Maybe I was doing it wrong, but I much prefer the brushes I have to this one. Sorry MK!

One thing that I did not realize, as I was looking around the Mary Kay website, was that they have a lot more than just make-up. They have skin care, sun & body, fragrances, and even a men's line! Who knew!? This is not the same Mary Kay that I remember!

To check out "not your momma's Mary Kay" products, you can visit the Mary Kay Website. You don't even have to attend a party to purchase products. The website matches you up with a consultant that you and purchase with at any time! So smart.

Thanks Mary Kay for the fun products to try!

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

Adventures in Products: Clinique Free Gift Time!!

It is FINALLY starting to feel like spring around here!
And I've got a little help to get me into the spring mood...

The Clinique Free Gift! (at Von Maur)
YAY!

There are 2 choices of colors either "pink" or "violet"
and I went with pink!
(Look at all those pink colors boost the spring mood!)

The item on the far left of the picture is not apart of the free gift, but everything else it. There is a blush, mascara, lip gloss, lip stick, under eye moisturizer, and regular moisturizer. AND it all comes in that super cute make-up bag! I already love Clinique mascara and lip gloss, but am excited to try the other products.
Now, they are not just handing these babies out for free. You DO have to make a purchase of $25.00 to get one, but I had been wanting to try the Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturizer, so I splurged and got some!

Have you ever gotten the Clinique Free Gift?
(If not, you should!!)

Adventures in Products: My Last BirchBox

twistband™ Headband Collection ~ Skinny and stylish, each band is made of super-soft elastic that won’t leave a crease behind or induce a dreaded headband headache. Searching for a super slim option? Try the Solid Christa—they’re especially great for those growing out their bangs. These headbands always slip off of my head, and this one is was no exception...maybe it is the shape of my head!? It is a good idea, but not for me.

Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream ~ A moisturizing base of omega-rich squalene, organic shea butter, jojoba oil, and coconut oil protects against the redness and irritation associated with shaving, while organic green tea extracts infuse skin with antioxidants. I normally just use conditioner as shave cream, but I gave this one a try. It smells great, and did not irritate my skin...but I would not pay $20 for a bottle of shave cream.

Madewell for Birchbox Nail Emery Board ~ This sturdy manicure savior has a rough side for shaping and filing down breaks or snags, plus a smoother face to gently finish nail edges. I had seen a few people get these last month, and I was hoping I would get one! It works great and I am excited to have a new emery board.

Evologie Intensive Blemish Serum ~ The patent pending YS3 Complex delivers blemish-banishing ingredients, like tea tree oil and salicylic acid, beneath the skin’s surface. Willow bark extract reduces inflammation and redness. Thankfully, since high school, my skin has been fairly blemish free. When I find one, I will give this a try. It smells nice and it sounds like a good product.

Youngblood Mineral Radiance Moisture Tint ~ Seve Marine, a green algae known for its super-hydrating properties, and hyaluronic acid tackle dry skin. Antioxidant-packed kiwi extract and Vitamin E fight off free radicals, licorice root extract calms redness and inflammation, and a blend of minerals, including Rhodolite, Zincite, Hematite and Malachite, protects skin cells. I was so very excited to try this, but the pump on the sample packaging did not work - boo! I might try to get some out of the bottle using a Q-tip. Anyone else have a problem with the pump?

This was the final Birchbox in my subscription, and I decided not to renew. I did enjoy at least 1 item in each box, and some boxes were great, but I was just not pleased enough with the items I was receiving to continue. If Birchbox ever changes their procedures, letting subscribers have more control over what comes in their box (for example opting out of getting fragrance samples, or getting more make-up samples) then I might consider signing up again. I have been looking at Ispy, and have heard good things about it. Anyone have an opinion about Ispy and their products?

Adventures in Products: February Birch Box

Juicy Couture Couture La La ~ Created with the fearless free spirit in mind, this brand new scent from Juicy Couture is a punk rock update on the original Juicy Couture. One part fruity, one part tart, and one part floral, it’s neither too sweet nor too girly. Thumbs down to fragrances in the BB. Not a fan of the scent.

Dr. Jart+ Black Label Detox BB Beauty Balm ~ Their premium formula is a five-in-one primer, serum, moisturizer, SPF, and sheer tint. It uses exotic caviar extract and other actives to tame problem complexions.  I tried this once and I think I may be allergic to something in it. My face got red and irritated, and I actually washed it off and started over with my make-up for the day. I guess 5-in-1 is to many for me!

Lancôme HYPNÔSE DRAMA ~ Mascara’s volume-boosting abilities have reached new heights with Lancôme’s Hypnôse Drama. It draws its power from the innovative oversized brush and fortifying formula. You’ll get instant volume gratification from the very first coat, and it only gets better from there. I'm not sure that I like the brush, but I do like the results I get from the mascara. My lashes look longer and thicker. The brush is not the best at separating the lashes, but it's shape makes it easy to get all the lashes in the corners of my eyes.

Ojon damage reverse™ Restorative Finishing Spray ~ Ojon’s Restorative Finishing Spray offers lightweight, malleable hold, leaving hair glossy and pillow-soft (no stickiness, pinky swear!). As part of the damage reverse™ product line, which focuses on combating a slew of tress enemies (including sun, pollution, coloring, chemicals, heat styling, diet, and stress), it also conditions, nourishes and repairs parched and damaged strands. I cant speak to the reversal of damage yet, but I have been liking this finishing spray. The smell is a little strong, but not bad. The sample is quite large so I will be able to use it for a while and hopefully see some results.

Ghirardelli Milk & Caramel SQUARES ~ Ghirardelli’s melt-in-your-mouth milk chocolate squares filled with velvety caramel. The individually-wrapped squares are perfect for snacking, and each is just under 75 calories. If you can be convinced to share, they make thoughtful treats for fellow chocolate-lovers. Ghirardelli has always been one of my favorite chocolates so this little treat was a nice surprise in my  box this month! If you have never tried their chocolate, you totally should!

Overall this month's box was just ok. 3 out of the 5 items I have enjoyed. Hopefully next month will be 5 out of 5!

Adventures in Products: January BirchBox

I knew it would be hard for BirchBox to do better with my January box than they did with my December box. I LOVED my December box and actually just used up my points to get a bottle of Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique - Protect because I liked the product so much!
(If you missed what I got in my December box, the info is HERE)

On to January...
Not as good as December, but still pretty good...
Deborah Lippmann the Stripper to go: Each packet contain a “mitt” that has been soaked with The Stripper, a gentle but effective polish remover. The lavender formula has a soothing scent, plus aloe to moisturize nails and cuticles.
This was a handy little product - and would love to have some to take on trips to change my nail polish color. The little mitt covers one finger at a time, and there was plenty of remover to get a dark color off of all 10 of my finger nails. It smelled not as bad a regular polish remover and my cuticles did feel moisturized when I was done. Good product.

theBalm® cosmetics Hot Mama Shadow & Blush All-in-One: This illuminating powder is one of the most flattering blush, highlighter, and shadow combos we’ve ever come across. It combines subtle color with light-reflecting silica particles to give us the peachy keen complexions we’ve always wanted. Wear it on your cheeks, your lids, and wherever you want to add a dose of shimmery warmth.
I've seen other people get these in their boxes, so I was excited to get one in mine. The color I got was a little on the orange side for me, but it does look ok. Not something that I will use every day, and more of a summer color for me. But I liked it.

Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo: Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, this clarifying shampoo restores health and shine to overworked tresses.
This is the 2nd Number 4 hair product I have tired, and I have not been in love with the brand. This shampoo did make my hair feel clean but I did not see a difference in the shine. And it did not lather up well in the shower...If anything the bottle is a great travel size and can be refilled when the sample is gone.

Aerie Shimmer Fragrance: This enchanting scent is a blend of bergamot, peony, and a subtle hint of vanilla.
Said it before, will say it again. NOT A FAN. Dear Birch Box, please quit sending fragrances in the boxes. Nobody likes them! (However, I did gather up all of my fragrances samples from the past year and used them as white elephant gift this Christmas!)

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè (24-Hour Miracle Cream)This velvety moisturizer gives skin the ultimate silky finish, thanks to generous amounts of soothing shea butter and aloe vera. It’s rich without being heavy, and can be used on all skin types. Plus, it doubles as a makeup remover, post-shave soother, and baby cream. Who says beauty isn’t practical?
I have only used this as a moisturizer, and I do like it. Not to heavy, doesn't leave my skin feeling oily. Great moisture for the dry winter months!

Adventures in the Products: Clean Dishes!

I have to be honest,

That's why I was so excited when Influenster sent me some new scents of Palmolive dish soap to try.
For free! (even better!)

Adventures in Products: December BirchBox = 2 Thumbs Up!

Well, I have to just throw it out there. I think the December BirchBox is my favorite thus far. (AND there was even a fragrance included in it - that's how much I loved the other products in the box!)

Juicy Couture
"Top notes of watermelon, passion fruit, and mandarin combine with bright whiffs of marigold and green apple. Rose, vanilla, and yummy caramel undertones anchor the scent." Blah, Blah, Blah. I was not a fan of the fragrance, and it did not smell fruity at all. Please don't sent any more fragrances BrichBox.

ModelCo SHINE Ultra Lip Gloss
"Sydney-based ModelCo prides itself in creating products that are fuss-free but high impact—ideal for off-duty beauties (models and non-models, alike). This non-sticky gloss goes on smoothly and gives lips a soft punch of sheer, slightly shimmery color. This slim tube has a built-in mirror so you can reapply on the go." I have been loving this lip gloss. I got a full size product in my box (yay!). Like the description says it is non-sticky, which I love. I love the color and it tastes a bit like strawberries, but not overwhelming. I love this product! I also love that the tube has a mirror on the side - so smart!

Benefit it's potent! eye cream
"A team of actives, including cocoa extract, boosts microcirculation and helps fade the look of dark circles. Sodium hyaluronate creates a moisture shield on skin. A heroic peptide complex works to restore under-eye skin, while botanicals provide serious backup support. With apple extract to up the collagen count and loquat extract to fight free radicals, you’re covered." I love the packaging of this little sample. You don't need much so even though my jar of it is little, it will last a while and I should hopefully be able to tell if this product really works or not. So far I am liking the results!

Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique - Protect
"From heat styling to chemical processing, there isn’t much we haven’t subjected our hair to in the pursuit of beauty. And my, how our poor follicles have suffered. Fortunately, this ambrosia-like hair treatment revitalizes even the most parched strands and frayed split ends. In addition, it provides protection against heat styling and even improves the performance of your tools." This was the product that I was MOST excited to try in my box. I blow dry my hair and use a flat iron or curling iron on it - not every day, but a few days a week. Every product I have tried like this leaves my hair feeling oily and heavy. I got 3 packets of the product and can make each one last for several days since my hair is not super long or thick. I love the smell! I put it on my hair when it is wet and then blow dry. I have been loving the results. My hair is not as frizzy when I am finished blow drying and is so shiny and smooth when I finish curling/flat ironing it. I am seriously considering purchasing this one...I wonder if it is less expensive at Ulta?

Emily's Chocolates Chocolate Covered Fortune Cookies
"Everyone knows that the best part of Chinese takeout is the fortune cookies, so it’s about time these treats received the royal treatment. Seasonal flavors (think peppermint and gingerbread) as well as classic vanilla get a coating of milk, white, and dark chocolate for a sinfully good update to the original." I got to sample a peppermint fortune cookie, and it just what Emily said it would be - a chocolate covered fortune cookie. Nothing super special. It tasted good. The cookie was still crunchy under the chocolate layer. I would not pay $6 for a box of 6 cookies, but if given one for free I wouldn't turn it down.

Over all well done this month BirchBox. Full size product, super cute tiny product, 3 samples of one product, and chocolate! They all get a thumbs up from me!

Adventures in Products: November Birch Box

*Remember to mark your calendar
to share your Christmas tree photos
Click {HERE} for the details

Here is the scoop on my November Birch Box
(Don't know what Birch Box is? Go {HERE} to find out more!)
Masqueology Revitalizing Eye Mask
Rich in rare marine ingredients, this product fight the signs of jetlag and under eye fatigue by reducing puffiness and brightening dark circles. When I first opened these I almost threw them out. There were 2 patches to put under your eyes that were super slimy and hard to even grab and put on. But some how I managed to get them on my face, under my eyes. They are not sticky so you have to lay down when you have them on. I did feel like my under eye area was a little less dark and my skin was a little tighter, so I give these a thumbs up.

MCMC Fragrance Phoenix Eau de Parfum
The top note of vanilla quickly translates to a honeysuckle when it touches skin. The lasting note is peach, and its lightweight essence personifies the story of Phoenix. NOT A FAN (big surprise!) Dear Birchbox, remember that one month I got a box without a fragrance sample. That was awesome. Please do it again...

Kiehl's Creme de Corps
Whether you have dry or oily skin, it’s aching for nourishment. This rich and hydrating body moisturizer provides all-day hydration for the largest organ you have. This sample size was perfect for my purse, and the lotion make my hands feel soft and moisturized. No strong smell which is a bonus for me!

Masqueology 7D Moisture Cream
Developed by a team of Korean dermatologists, it triggers skin’s natural vitamin D production to keep your complexion healthy. Unlike the sun, it reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, rather than accelerating their development—who can ask for more? I really liked this moisturizer. I kind of wish the sample was a little bigger so I could have used it for a few more days to see how my skin felt after several uses.

Masqueology Masque Cleanse
The innovative formula contains a bubbling technology that activates upon contact with air and works to gently exfoliate and clean deep into pores. This cleanser left my face feeling clean which I like, but it did leave my face a little on the dry side.

stila all over shimmer liquid luminizer
Blends seamlessly into skin—and unlike some other shimmer powders and creams, the liquid formula won’t cake, clog, or budge. Plus, the easy-to-use brush allows for precise, goof-proof application. I tried this as both a lip shimmer and just under my eye brows go add a bit of a pop to my eye make-up. I will use the sample, but I don't think I would purchase it.

Adventures in Products: October BirchBox

Happy Monday!
I bet you thought you were going to get an update on Operation: Finish Basement today, right?
Well, you are going to have to wait for tomorrow for that, because today is BirchBox Brag Day.
Here is what I got in my October box
(I forgot to take a picture when I opened, so I just snagged the picture for the BirchBox site)
LUNA Bar: Made with 70 percent organic ingredients, LUNA Bars are full of calcium, folic acid, iron, and vitamins D—nutrients women need on a daily basis. Each bar is also a good source of protein and fiber, so you’ll feel satisfied post-snack and be less likely to reach for that bag of chips. I got the lemon zest flavor and it tasted ok, but I make my own granola bars and would not really pay $1.25 per bar for these.

Marie Veronique Organics Body Oil: Marie Veronique Organics has formulated this lush all-over oil potent antioxidants with essential fatty acids that hydrate and firm skin. It sinks in immediately and, thanks to natural grapefruit and lavender oils, leaves skin sweetly scented. I have not gotten to try this yet, but my skin tends to get really dry in the winter, so I might save this to try in a few months. It smells great!

Joanna Vargas Daily Serum:This natural serum is like a green juice for your skin. It contains vitamins A, C, and E to fight wrinkles and fade the look of dark spots. Plus, it has a high dose of hyaluronic acid to create a lasting moisture shield on skin. This is literally green juices. I have tried the super tiny sample and it does make my skin feel hydrated but I don't think there is enough in the sample to see any real changes in dark spots or wrinkles...

Sprout Lip Balm:
Sprout uses select organic and fair trade ingredients to create all their highly potent balms. The base of each flavor is a simple but potent compound of natural wax, coconut oil, and cocoa butter. Fewer additives mean less irritation, making this handmade balm ideal for sensitive skin. I like the idea behind the all natural lip balm. I got the cocoa flavor, and it tastes like cocoa and a little like honey too - probably from the bee's wax. I'm not head over heals for this lip balm, I am a big fan of Burt's Bees, and this product was just not good enough to make me want to switch.

essie Nail Polish: I finally got a color of polish that I will actually wear! It's not the one in the picture at the top. I got Carry On and it is a deep burgundy color. Perfect for fall!
**DID YOU NOTICE WHAT WAS NOT IN THE BOX THIS MONTH?! Finally a month with no perfume sample - High-five BirchBox! I would give this box a 7 out of 10. I am always a little bummed to only get 4 items (the Luna Bar was an "extra" since it is not a beauty product so even though there were 5 items in the box, it is only counted as 4 beauty items) in stead of 5, but hopefully November will be even better.

Adventures in Products: BirchBox Aug

I didn't take a picture of my box because it looked disgusting from one of the products spilling...more on that to come. But here is the picture of my box from the Birchbox website.

per-fékt Beauty Lash Perfection Gel

What Birchbox says: The high-tech gel formula combines a flattering black pigment with a nourishing cocktail of ingredients to prime, condition, darken, and lengthen your lashes. The non-allergenic formula is made without sulfates, parabens, or artificial fragrances.
What I say: There was really barely enough in the container to coat my lashes - it was such a small sample! What I did get out of the tube, went on silky smooth, and did make my lashes look longer. I like the non-allergenic formula because I wear contacts and some mascaras will bother my eyes.

Caldrea Hand Soap

What Birchbox says: Made with ethically-sourced aloe vera gel, olive oil, and essential oils, the soaps are formulated to soften and purify without drying out skin.
What I say: My hands did feel soft and not dried out, but I was not a huge fan of the fragrance. I got 2 samples of lavender pine (If they are putting 2 in the box would it hurt to let me try 2 different fragrances?!) and it was way more pine than lavender...I kinda felt like I smelled like a lumber jack!

Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy La Fleur

What Birchbox says: The sheer perfume has the original’s fruity top notes combined with heady honeysuckle, gardenia, and jasmine.
What I say: Fragrance AGAIN! Do they ever send out boxes without perfume in them?! Again, not the smell for me, to floral...

DDF® Brightening Cleanser

What Birchbox says: Developed by a leading dermatologist, the targeted formula uses a team of natural skin brighteners, including licorice root and mulberry bark, to even out your complexion and lighten discolorations. Over time, you’ll have noticeably smoother, brighter skin.
What I say: Well this was the one item I was really excited to try...but when I opened my box I discovered that the contents had leaked all over everything. Boo. I have contacted Birchbox to get a replacement...but I have never had this happen before and I don't really know if they do things like that. (Any advice fellow birchboxers?)

Schick Hydro Silk Razor

What Birchbox says: It has a water-activated moisturizing serum that moisturizes for up to two hours after shaving. Plus, the five blades have skin guards that follow the natural contours of your body to smooth skin and help prevent irritation.
What I say: I enjoyed having a new razor. It worked great, however I still needed to put lotion on my legs when I got out of the shower. There was a $4 off coupon on the packaging that I will probably use when the blade on this one gets dull.

Overall opinion: Even if the cleanser had not spilled all over everything, I still would have been slightly disappointed in the August box. The best item was the razor and that was an 'extra'. I'm still waiting to see if I will receive a replacement cleanser...

Adventures in Products: July Birch Box!

So I have not posted what I received in my Birch Box for a few months not - mostly because I have not been super thrilled with the contents. But this month I am very excited to try each of the products - not duds in this box!

Amika hair mask and hair treatment to repair split ends and make your hair extra soft.
I haven't tried the oil treatment yet, but the hair mask smells great and made my hair feel super soft - my hair is always in need of a little TLC!
Boscia BB cream is an all in one primer, foundation and SPF.
It adjusts to match your skin tone!
I have been using this for the past few days and I really like it!
It is light and covers well and protects my skin at the same time!
Eyeko skinny liquids eyeliner (black - finally a color I wear!) It goes on easy...
but is not so easy to get off - which is good and bad!
Harvey Prince Hello perfume smells good, but not really my scent.
Larabar - totally ate this right after I took the picture and it wasn't to bad!
A little goopey but that could be because it is SO hot outside!
Birchbox earbuds - while I have not worn then when I am working out,
but just putting them in my ears they stayed put,
which gets a 2 thumbs up from me since most ear buds do not stay in my ears at all!

I would have to say this is my favorite box yet.
With the exception of the perfume, I will get good use out of all of these items!

Adventures in Products: Zoya Nail Polish

I love a good link party and today I am linking up for the first time at
The Nail Files

Lately I have been loving coral colors.
When I saw this color "Kate" by The Small Things Blog I had to try it!
This is my first bottle of Zoya, and I am loving it. Yesterday I was in the pool for 2 1/2 hours teaching swimming lessons, and my nails still look great!
My new polish routine is to get all my stuff for the day ready to go for work, paint nails and then carefully get into the car. Once there I have a 40 min drive for my mails to get good and dry - nothing to touch but the steering wheel!
Happy Friday!
