Adventures in the Basement: Decisions, Decisions

We have been making lots of basement related decisions this past week.
Decisions that should be easy, but are kind of hard. For the moment they are mostly electrical decisions...
Where do we want electrical outlets?
Do we want a fan/heat lamp combo in the bathroom or just a fan?
At the sink, do we want lights above the mirrors or beside the mirrors?
Should the family room lights be on a 2 way switch (so they can be turned on and off at 2 different switches)?

Starting from nothing is exciting, but it can be hard to have a completely empty canvas of a space. So, I thought I should ask you for some advise, please?!
Advise topic of the day: Bathrooms
What do you love about your bathroom?
OR
What do you wish you could change about your bathroom?
I've been pulling together ideas that I like from different rooms on my favorite website Houzz. All of these pictures are from the "Traditional Bathroom" category. There are things that I love in each bathroom, but none of them is exactly what we are picturing...

I LOVE the tile in this bathroom as well as the colors!

I like the lighting fixtures in this bathroom, and the fun pop of color in the shower tile, and matching rugs. We will have a double sink in our bathroom, but do not have enough room for a cabinet between them.

I like the lights on this bathroom as well, and the way the molding around the mirrors camouflages the outlets, making it look all like one piece. I've been going back and forth between wanting just plain mirrors, and medicine cabinet mirrors that open for some extra storage. What do you think?

Can you see the little shelf built into the knee wall of he shower? I would love one of those! And I like the look of the 2 separate mirrors with the lights above them over the sinks. I am not crazy about the cabinet that holds the sinks - it seems like there is a lot of potential storage space wasted there...

So, I need to know - If you could change one thing about your bathroom, what would it be? Is there something you would say EVERY person needs to have in their bathroom?

Thanks for the advise!

  1. OH man... I'd redo all 3 of my bathrooms... they are all so small. I'd make sure I'd have bigger vanities - with a neutral color. I'd get better fixtures. I'd get a walk in shower in one - a bigger tub in another.
I LOATHE my bathroom. I could go on for hours on what NOT to get. I'll just send you pictures of mine & you'll know what NOT to get :)

  2. I like absolutely nothing about my powder room (which some previous owner carved out of nothing and has the gas line and water meter in it) or my main bath (which features hideous powder blue tile).

I'd retile my main bath completely, switch out the vanity, and get rid of the awful George Jetson light fixture. I love serenity in bathrooms: cool, easy to clean tiles, nice light fixtures, more storage.

  3. MEDICINE CABINETS all the way we did them in our bathroom and oh my holy baby jesus batman best thing we ever did.

On outlets add and extra one. It doesn't matter if you think you need it just add it. I wish we had another outlet for things like charging things (my husband's razors for example).

We have a lamp in our bathroom and it takes up a plug I will say a lamp in the bathroom is pretty awesome as well.

  4. Oh, how exciting! I wish so much that our Master Bath had two sinks but our house is 33 years old and that wasn't the "thing" to do then. We have survived but never again! I don't care of medicine cabinets, but they do serve a great purpose. Good luck!
