Adventures in the Basement: Our New Floor!

There have been some days in the past months that we thought today would never come. When we were sweaty and covered with dirt and concrete dust, the day when we had our new floor in the basement seemed so far away. But today was the day! We have a new concrete floor in the basement - woohoo!

Before we could pour the concrete, first we put down a layer of compacted stone, a layer of plastic vapor barrier, a layer of insulation, and finally the layer of rebar and pex pipe for the radiant heat. Here is what it looked like this morning when I left for work:

We are so blessed that Daniel's Uncle Mark offered to help us with the concrete floor. He called in a few of his "concrete guys" and ordered up a load of redi mix concrete for us. (Uncle Mark own a cement powder transport company and has been working with cement for many years! So he knows his stuff and we are so thankful to have his expertise on this! We really could not have done it without him.)
So the men worked hard getting 15 yards of concrete in to the basement to make a 5 inch layer across the whole floor. The orange pex pipe is now encased in the concrete slab and in a few weeks we will be able to turn on the heat down there.

I think the guys did an AMAZING job. It is smooth and flat. Perfect!

To give you a bit of perspective, the picture below was taken a little over a month ago.

Getting this floor done certainly has been an adventure!
Don't worry, there is lots of work left on Operation: Finish Basement.
replace windows
insulation
walls
electrical
bathroom
tile
flooring
doors
paint
trim...

In the mean time we are going to take a bit of a holiday break from the basement.
Hopefully I will have some more time to do non-basement related projects.
Like decorating for Christmas!
