Adventures in Reading: Grace's Pictures

I am a huge fan of historical fiction, so when Grace's Pictures came up as an option for me to review for Tyndale House Publishers, I was so very excited to dive into my new book! (Not to judge a book by it's cover, but this cover is beautiful!!)

Grace is an Irish immigrant who has spent the past 8 years of her life (from age 10 - 18) living in an Irish work house. When the opportunity for her to be sponsored and sent to America comes along, it takes all of her strength and bravery to make the voyage alone. Her mother's words ring in her head "You are smart. You are important. You are able." As she struggles to find her way in this strange new city of New York. Because of past circumstances, Grace has a very hard time trusting anyone. She is suspicious of well meaning police officers, and not even sure of the existence of God. As she makes her way in life, by working as a nanny, Grace discovers a new passion. Photography. Her little Brownie camera bring great joy to some, and much trouble for Grace as she inadvertently snaps a photo of a New York gangster who does not want to be photographed. Grace learns to place her trust in God, as well as in the police officer who is always around at just the right moment to save her.

I have to say, that I very much enjoyed this story. There were times when I felt I could have used a bit more historical context, or detailed knowledge of the city of New York, but the plot line sucked me in and I found myself reading late into the night to find out what would happen! It seemed that the end of the story left much room for a 2nd Ellis Island novel, and I would like to find out what becomes of Grace, Owen, and their families, as well as the New York gangsters! Cindy Thomson did a wonderful job creating believable characters and a compelling plot, filled with action and emotion.
