However, when we were little, every afternoon there was always nap time. And when the little kids went down for their naps, the adults got to play...cards! They would play hand and foot and drink coffee while the kids napped. This particular visit, I was old enough not to have to take a nap and old enough to play hand and foot. (You have to understand how exciting this was for me!!!) As the cards were being dealt and the cups of coffee were being poured, I remember asking if I could have a cup of coffee too. I was told (probably by my mom, hi mom!) that if I was going to have coffee, I couldn't put any sugar in it, I had to drink it black.
OK, pause for a second. You know how flavored coffee smells amazing, but does not really taste like it smells, right?!? Well, picture 9 year old me smelling the wonderful smell of french vanilla flavored coffee and then taking a sip...blah, yuck!
I remember thinking it tasted horrible, but I want to be like the other grown ups, so I drank that whole cup of coffee. And I did it with a smile, because that was the grown up thing to do (can you tell that I am stubborn!). Anyway, after that day, I am sure it was a loooooong time before I had coffee again. It must have been college when I started drinking it on a daily basis in the morning, and even in the dead hot steamy middle of summer, I still love to sip on a good cup of coffee in the morning. Decaf or regular, it is a part of my morning, usually sitting next to my journal and Bible.
Currently my favorites are:
and
and when I can get my hands on it, I love a cup of LaSalle Street Coffee.
I love that your first coffee experience was at Grandma's house at that old formica table :) :) I'm going to visit her this weekend and can't wait for some Hand and Foot around Grandma's table! :)
ReplyDeleteI love that table. I wrote my name on the bottom of it when I was in middle school and now I have it at my house! It is going to be my craft table once we finish the basement...cards around her new table is just not the same ;)
DeleteReturning the follow from Happy Hour Projects - you have such a cute blog!
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was a kid being told I wasn't allowed to have coffee. My dad's reason was that it would make my freckles turn blue - and that only happened to kids. When I was too old for that to work anymore (LOL) it was about the same time he switched to decaf, so I was allowed to try, I just couldn't have more than one spoon of creamer and one spoon of sugar. And thus began my love of coffee - I must have been about eight! :)
I didn't even really try straight-up coffee until I started working full-time... craazy! You had a serious head-start on me :) That's the greatest story!
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely memories! I started drinking coffee at an early age as well. I was having migrane headaches and the doctor ordered me to drink a good cup of joe!
ReplyDeleteVeronica, I love the story you told about drinking coffee with your grandparents! I'm curious, do you drink your coffee black as an adult or do you add stuff to it? The coffee companies you showed look fabulous! What a cute blog post.
ReplyDeleteI do still drink it black! On occasion I will add cream - I LOVE the little blue french vanilla creamers. But on a daily basis, I just drink it black. :)
DeleteThe first time I had coffee my grandpa took me to Starbucks and got me a chocolate orange flavored coffee. I wasn't sure what I thought about it at the time, but it's a good memory. I know he wanted to be the first one to introduce me to coffee. :-)
